Concept quizzes

When an answer is half right, ask about the other half.

In a concept quiz, each question tests one concept. When a student's answer misses part of it, AI writes them a follow-up question on just the missing part, at the end of their quiz.

Concept quizzes: rings with one part missing, filled in by coral arcs
  • Up to 3 follow-upsFor each concept. You set the limit
  • 2 credits a follow-upOr 25 with the Smart writer
  • One score per conceptA follow-up earns back what was missed
  • Only for that studentYour quiz's questions never change

How it works

A half-right answer gets one more question.

A score of 60 doesn't tell you if a student didn't know the rest, or just left it out. A concept quiz finds out right away, and asks only about the part they missed.

  • 01

    Each question is one concept

Write a short-answer question and its correct answer, as you always do. Each one tests one concept.

  • 02

    AI finds what was missed

Each answer is graded as it's turned in, and the grader names the ideas it covered and the ones it missed.

  • 03

A follow-up on just that part

LMSystems.ai writes that student a new question on the missed ideas, and adds it to the end of their quiz.

For students

One more question, on just what they missed.

Follow-ups come after the quiz's own questions, and the question count grows with them. Each one is a short answer, written for that student.

  • It asks only about the ideas their answer missed, never the ones they got right
  • It's asked in a new way, so an earlier answer doesn't fit it
  • It's written while they answer the next questions
  • A follow-up that's still half right can get another, up to your limit
  • Multiple choice, multi-select and blanks graded from your answer key get none

What you see

Every follow-up, in the response. One score for each concept.

Each response shows the follow-ups a student got, what they answered and how it was graded, under the question each one follows.

  • Each follow-up under the question it follows, with its answer key
  • The student's answer and grade for every follow-up
  • One score for each concept: a follow-up earns its share of what was missed
  • Follow-ups are graded from their own answer key, and the AI-use check skips them

Setup

On in one checkbox.

Write your questions as you always do. Turn a quiz into a concept quiz in its settings, and LMSystems.ai writes each follow-up when a student needs one.

  • 01

    Turn it on

Check Concept quiz on a quiz's Settings tab, under the grade level. It needs AI grading, and grades each answer as it's turned in.

  • 02

    Set the limit

Choose how many follow-ups one concept can get, from 1 to 3, so no student gets stuck.

  • 03

    Pick the question writer

Fast writes each follow-up for 2 credits. Smart aims more closely at what was missed, for 25.

Questions

Good questions, answered.

What does a concept quiz cost?

Each follow-up takes 2 credits with the Fast writer, or 25 with Smart, and its answer is graded like any other. A follow-up that fails costs nothing, and with no credits left, students get none.

Which questions get follow-ups?

Short answers, and blanks you set to AI grading. Multiple choice, multi-select and blanks graded from your answer key never do: their grade doesn't name the ideas that were missed.

How is it scored?

Each concept counts once. A follow-up earns its share of what the answers before it missed: 60 on the question and 75 on its follow-up makes 90 for the concept.

Does the student wait for the follow-up?

It's written while they answer the next questions. If they reach the end first, the quiz page waits until it's ready.

Does the AI read the student's answer to write it?

No. It gets your question, its correct answer and the grader's lists of the ideas each answer covered and missed, never the student's own words.

Does it change my quiz?

No. Follow-ups belong to that student's attempt. Your questions stay as you wrote them, and other students never get them.
