Adaptive quizzes

When an answer is half right, ask about the other half.

An adaptive quiz works like a McGraw Hill SmartBook assignment, with real AI behind it. SmartBook asks a missed question again later, or one like it. An adaptive quiz reads what the student wrote, finds the part they missed, and writes them a new question on just that part: right away, or at the end of their quiz.

Adaptive quizzes: rings with one part missing, filled in by coral arcs
  • Right away or at the endYou choose when the follow-up is asked
  • A score that only goes upA follow-up earns back what was missed
  • Only for that studentYour quiz's questions never change

How it works

A half-right answer gets one more question.

A score of 60 doesn't tell you if a student didn't know the rest, or just left it out. An adaptive quiz finds out, and asks only about the part they missed.

  • 01

    Write your questions

Write a short-answer question and its correct answer, as you always do. Each one tests one idea.

  • 02

    AI finds what was missed

Each answer is graded as it's turned in, and the grader names the ideas it covered and the ones it missed.

  • 03

A follow-up on just that part

LMSystems.ai writes that student a new question on the missed ideas: right away, before they see the grade, or at the end of their quiz.

Two ways to ask

Right away, or at the end of the quiz.

You choose when each quiz asks its follow-ups. The follow-up is written the same way in both: on just the part the answer missed.

  • 01

    Right away

The follow-up shows in the answer's feedback, before the grade. The grade is then for both answers together, and never lower than the first.

  • 02

At the end of the quiz

Follow-ups go after the quiz's own questions. A follow-up that still misses something can get another, up to the limit you set.

  • 03

    Which one to pick

Right away asks while the question is fresh. At the end lets students finish first, and can ask more than once on the same question.

For students

One more question, on just what they missed.

Right away, the follow-up comes before the grade. At the end, follow-ups come after the quiz's own questions, and the question count grows with them. Each one is a short answer, written for that student.

  • It asks only about the ideas their answer missed, never the ones they got right
  • It's asked in a new way, so an earlier answer doesn't fit it
  • Right away, it comes before the grade, so they try again while the question is fresh
  • At the end, it's written while they answer the next questions
  • Multiple choice, multi-select and blanks graded from your answer key get none

What you see

Every follow-up, in the response. One score for each question.

Each response shows the follow-ups a student got, what they answered and how it was graded, under the question each one follows.

  • Each follow-up under the question it follows, with its answer key
  • The student's answer to every follow-up, and how it was graded
  • One score for each question: a follow-up only adds back what was missed
  • Follow-ups have their own answer key, and the AI-use check skips them

Setup

On in one checkbox.

Write your questions as you always do. Turn a quiz into an adaptive quiz in its settings, and LMSystems.ai writes each follow-up when a student needs one.

  • 01

    Turn it on

Check Adaptive quiz on a quiz's Settings tab, under the grade level, or in a new quiz's setup. It needs AI grading, and grades each answer as it's turned in.

  • 02

    Choose when to ask

Right away, before the student sees the grade, or at the end of the quiz.

  • 03

    Set the limit

At the end of the quiz, choose how many follow-ups one question can get, and the question writer. Fast writes quickly. Smart aims more closely at what was missed.

Questions

Good questions, answered.

How is this different from SmartBook?

Both come back to what a student missed. SmartBook marks an answer right or wrong, then asks the same question again later, or another one on that topic from its question bank. An adaptive quiz reads a short answer, finds the ideas it missed, and writes a new question on only those ideas, so a student who got half of it right is asked about the other half. It works on the questions you write. SmartBook is a trademark of McGraw Hill, which has no connection to LMSystems.ai.

What does an adaptive quiz cost?

Each follow-up takes 2 AI credits to write (25 with the Smart AI), and its answer is graded for the same credits as any other. With no credits left, students get none.

Which questions get follow-ups?

Short answers, and blanks you set to AI grading. Multiple choice, multi-select and blanks graded from your answer key never do: their grade doesn't name the ideas that were missed.

How is it scored?

A follow-up can only raise the score, and never counts as an extra question. Right away, the grader reads both answers together and gives one grade, never lower than the first. At the end of the quiz, a follow-up earns its share of what the answers before it missed: 60 on the question and 75 on its follow-up makes 90 for the question, and 100 on the follow-up makes 100.

Does the student wait for the follow-up?

Right away, they wait while it's written, then answer it before they see their grade. At the end of the quiz, it's written while they answer the next questions. If they reach the end first, the quiz page waits until it's ready.

Does the AI read the student's answer to write it?

No. It gets your question, its correct answer and the grader's lists of the ideas each answer covered and missed, never the student's own words.

Does it change my quiz?

No. Follow-ups belong to that student's attempt. Your questions stay as you wrote them, and other students never get them.
